JUXTAPOSITION

EXERCISE

  • choose a still life approach
  • take a book that you like and take
  • a illustrative image to represent it.

Definition of Juxtaposition

Juxtaposition is the placement of two things
(usually abstract concepts, though it can refer to
 physical objects) near each other.

The tutor used the oil industry to demonstrate
this viewpoint.

I chose to continue this subject and make
an illustrative magazine cover on the price of
oil.

I planned the image on using a oil can
with oil oozing from the spout and then
leading into coins to illustrate the " price"
of fuel. I could not find an oil can so
used a everyday tin can to represent
oil as an everyday commodity.

I filled the can with credit cards
and then poured oozing oil down
the can and into the monies at the
bottom

I then set this up as an
the Financial magazine
Economic Times.

the wording on the magazine says

the true cost of a barrel of oil

we investigate the rising cost of oil
and why it is becoming more critical
to dig for more...

The Juxtaposition of this image is the
oozing oil and the monies and credit
card as it illustrates that one is the
same " commodity" as the other.

Oil in the world has more of a value
to the world then any currency or
credit card. This image also
shows the oil as a commodity as
it is in a " take away" can which is
easily available to everyone.

It also has an underlying reference
to "supermarket" fuel as prices of
fuel ( derived from oil) is often dictated
by the price wars of the supermarket
retailer.

Comment.

I really enjoyed this exercise. I think if planned out in
advanced you could create many descriptive images
some which show a view from a juxtaposition.
