Take a series of images which shows the difference
between photographing in bright sunshine and then
under cloudy skies, compare these images.
Take 3 images showing the advantages of
taking an image in overcast conditions and
and demonstrate the use of shadowless
light.
Show the creative effects of photographing
in rainy conditions.
THE EFFECTS OF RAIN
The above photograph was taken whilst I was
shooting images for assignment 2
There were many puddles left after a late afternoon
downpour in central London. They are a great source
to capture some good images.
This particular shot was submitted to show the use
of implied triangles in photographic composition
Another creative effect of rain is photographing raindrops
Best photographed close up as they can often reflect the
environment around them.
The above image I set up in the garden and added a few extra drops
to create some shape. Raindrops can be on many surfaces and
can create pattern and texture to a composition.
I added this image to this blog as it is another effect of rain
I took this at Glastonbury last year about one hour after a
brief but heavy rainstorm. The mud and water was great to
photograph the people trying to make there way through
the festival in somewhat difficult conditions.
The above image was taken in a heavy rainstorm.
I tried to keep the camera dry and placed the camera on a
tripod as the conditions were windy. I have converted this
image to monochrome to show the more dramatic contrast
between light and dark and how rainy stormy weather can
help create dramatic images.
3 IMAGES TAKEN UNDER CLOUDY SKIES
I took this portrait under overcast skies in March.
The soft shadowless light has meant that the final
image is soft which completely suits the subject
of a small child, which should be softer.
If I was shooting a more dramatic portrait the contrast
of light and dark would add to the overall image and
create a dramatic scene.
I would look at shooting soft portrait images under
diffused or cloudy lighting conditions. This could
also be simulated by using shaded locations.
This images demonstrates that colour saturation levels
are enhanced under cloudy skies. I choose this
location for its brightly coloured beach huts. I also
choose to shoot on an over cast day to capture
the full intensity of the colour of the beach huts
The colour is not burn out by the glaring sun so
the colour tones are more saturated.
The above image is to demonstrate that you can capture
sun rays and dramatic skies when there is a rainstorm on its
way. This image captured in March in Rome demonstrates
this. It is important to measure both the light and dark areas
of the image as you could burn out the brights or under expose
the shadows.
I also took this image in Rome. The day was overcast
and the colours of this old farmhouse were amazing.
I enhanced the image but setting the white balance to
overcast which meant that there was more warm tones
added to the image as the camera will compensate
for the blue tones of the overcast sky.
If this photograph was taken on a sunny day the colours
would potentially be burn out. The cloudy skies have
allowed better capture of colour saturation.
COMMENTS
overcast skies and aid exposure and allows to the capture
of more saturated colours. Rain, cloud can create dramatic
compositions. The after effects of rain such as puddles are
a source of photographic composition
