CHOICES OF LIGHTING.
EXPRIMENTING WITH BULB
F16 20 SEC
I placed a black card over the lens and slighty moved
the shell. I wanted to experiment with using bulb
and judging exposure levels based on avail light.
f20 s sec
first pratice of trying to light the subject from behind
the top image using a white light and bottom using
a tungsten light and white balace set to tungsten
The shell is lit be a candle so the light source is hot
hence the red tone to the image as the kelvin level
is higher
f 5.6 8 sec
I wanted to try to seperate the texture in the shell
from that of the main body of the shell. I used an
hand held tungsten light to highlight the texture only.
I like the effect but their is not enough contrast in
the front of the shell to show the texture to best
effect. The light needed to come from the side
not the front.
f20 30 sec
experimenting with natural light and
restricted light to highlight texture both
on the backdrop and on the shell
natural light back and silver relfector
onto shell

ONE STUDIO FLASH , DIFFUSION
UMBRELLA RIGHT FRONT
ABOVE SUBJECT 45 DEGREES
ONE SILVER REFLECTOR
FRONT LEFT
I wanted to show the unique qualities
of this Nautilus shell which is its shape,
texture and iridescent surface. I
have shown the lighting for shape
and texture but had not captured
its sheen.
I also set the shell on a mirrored base
not only for an create effect but
also to reflect more light onto the
subject.
I place the light in front of the object
to enhance the shine of the shell but also
to reduce any shadow or contrast on the
shell. It was important to capture all the
detail and colour and not light and dark
areas on the image. I also enhanced this
by adding a sliver reflector to the front
right side and reflected back onto the
shell to capture the full iridescence
shine on the final image.
I experimented with exposure as
the object has some areas that
capture light more than others I
did not want to burn these sections
out on the final print. I chose an average
exposure between the light and darker
areas. This image was taken on synced
flash.
