A brief outline of planned lighting set up.
REVEALING SHAPE
one of the major qualities of an object is its shape.
Other factors of and object can effect the way you
photograph the shape, as some objects need to show
texture or colour in relationship with shape to indicate
to the viewer what the object is.
Lighting that is good for showing shape is CONTRAST
lighting as it defines the edge of the subject
The contrast between the object and the backdrop is
defined by light. The two obvious contrasts are light on dark
or dark on light.
Silhouette are an extreme way to depict an object
Another way to depict shape is by using RIM lighting
This is a technique where the edge of the subject is
picked out against a dark background.
The simplest is to mimic sunlight by using
a single light from behind the subject.
The essential thing is to ensure that the background is
protected from the light spill from the light and is
completely dark.
Planned set up.
Key lamp set behind the object
with no light on to the front of the
object.Assess the light that will come
out of the objects nose which has
holes in it.
Second set up use light box with black
background, cutaway to reveal the shape of
the subject. Use tungsten set up and
adjust white balance accordingly.
REVEALING FORM.
Form is some what harder to define than shape.
Shape is two dimensional and form is tree dimensional
Where revealing shape is about contrast. Form lighting
is a combination of light and shade.
This means the light should be directional and there for
create and opposite Shadow. The light also needs to
be from a reasonable angle that gives balance between
the light and the shade.
The two main factors in the lighting set up are
that a reasonable contrast between light and dark
on the side of the object and the second is the
shadow on the edge of the subject. The
three ways to effect the strenght of the form are
the strenght of the contrast from light to dark,
the degree of light diffusion and the direction
of the light.
Planned set up
set up one, diffused side light with white reflector
on shade side. Look at the level of shadow and
alter reflector accordingly.
Set up two look at reflecting shape onto a white
background to create a 3d relief of the shape,
REVEALING TEXTURE.
Texture is the quality of the surface of the object
you are photographing. It maybe rough or smooth
Texture levels can be very extreme such as a smooth
surface to a rough coarse grainy surface.
It is important to consider the angle in which you are
taking the image to capture the texture of the object
Too shallow a view may mean you miss the some of the
detail on the object. It is important to consider to use
a reflector to lighten the shadow to ravel the texture.
planned set up
Set up one, soft light from the side, look at where
you place the camera angle. maybe consider close
up cut into the frame. Look at using a white or
silver reflector.
REVEALING COLOUR
Light intensity is important when capturing
colour. It is important that the light dose not
burn out the colour. Light coloured tonally
with the colour of the object can enhance
the overall colour levels of the object.
It is important also to reduce the shadow
levels to keep the levels of colour. Diffusion
softens the shadows and enriches the colour
Planned set up
full studio set up white background
full diffused light. Try to intensify to
red and gold tones of the mask.
Try to shoot natural light with low sun
colour tones such as sunset coming
through the window to enhance the gold
colours of the mask
