USING LINE IN COMPOSITION

IMPLIED LINES EXERCISE

  • objective show the implied lines of these two photographs

  • analyse three of your photographs highlighting there implied lines

  • take two images that represent an eye line, the extension of a line or lines that point.

Analysis of implied lines

ANALYSIS OF MY OWN PHOTOGRAPHS

This is a simple composition but has two distinctive implied lines. The first is the actual horizon line where the sea and the sand meet. The second is the footprints in the sand which makes an implied line as the eye follows them from the foreground towards the subject in the background.

The above image works as it is made up of a series of vertical lines. The paddles direct the eye up and down the image. These are actual lines as they are made by the solid objects of the paddles. There are some implied lines in the background which are caused by the reflections in the puddle in the boat base.

This Lisbon street scene works as it is constructed up of strong lines that draws in viewers eye into the photograph and directs them down towards the subject as the middle of the frame. the first set of distinct lines are the those of the tram tracks that pull the eye down into the frame. The second implied lines are made from the repetitive shape of the windows in the side of the buildings. These emphasis the dynamic feeling of looking down into the frame.

This series of images show the use of line both actual and implied lines

ACTUAL LINES- AN EYELINE

This is a late evening shot taken of the gronges on the beach. The construction of the image is to draw the viewers eye into the photograph from the foreground and the background.

IMPLIED LINES- EXTENSION OF LINE OR A LINE THAT POINTS

The simple image is made up of the simple implied diagonal lines. They are implied as they are made up of layers of colours. There is also a small stone wall that also placed diagonally in the images. It draws the viewers eye into the scene and draws the eye to the main subject which is the single tree.

This image which frames the face of an old lady looking out of her window is constructed up of layers of lines. Firstly there is the strong balcony frame that is above her head, then there is the line of the brick works. Finally there is the line of the window frames which are in line with the frame of the balcony that she is leaning on. Again they allow the the eye to follow the line to the the lady in the centre of the image.

COMMENTS/LEARNING NOTES
CONTINUE TO COMPOSE IMAGES USING IMPLIED LINES, USE LANDSCAPE SCENES TO EXPERIMENT WITH NEW SHAPES AND LINES.
