a detailed editing process to select the shots that will make your
final selection of images that will be downloading and processed
in photoshop.
EVENT- London museum visit.
Initial image download
The initial review of the images shows that the images need to be
colour balanced as I shot them with white balance set at shade,
to warm the images up. It was also late afternoon in the atrium
so the lighting was limited. I therefore think all images need to
be lightened.
TECHNICAL EDIT
I reviewed in images in Bridge in photoshop and previewed each image to
look for the following.
TECHNICAL REVIEW OF SHARPNESS
TECHNICAL REVIEW OF EXPOSURE-looking at expose variance
REVIEW OF HISTOGRAM- I preview some images to review any highlights
and shadows that are likely to be lost.
REVIEW OF COMPOSITION- is the image correctly composed
THE SELECTS-
I then have marked the images into two groups
one which need to be reprocessed for tone,
levels, contrast and saturation
And the other group that I would like to change
the composition by cropping or masking some
of the image to strip out some details or improve
the balance of the image before I reprocess in
photoshop.

THE FIRST SELECTS
There were four elements of the Norman Foster atrium
that I wanted to convey in my photos.
- The linear lines and patterns of this area.
- The link of old and new structures.
- The human interaction within this space.
- The muted colour palette.
I then revisited each image and marked my final selection
of images that I fitted the criteria I had set up in my initial
plan for this shoot
I have therefore chosen the following images to edit
as my final selection. I marked them again as red in
bridge
review of each image selected
dsc 0696
this image shows the balance between the new atrium
structure and the old roman columns that are inside
the glass roof. it also has an underlying theme
of shape with the round central dome, the triangular
roof of the roman column and the triangular repetitive
shapes of the roof and staircase.
dsc 0702
this images conveys the combination of old and new
I also like the light in this image as it captures the low
afternoon sunlight on the glass frame
dsc 0705
this image is my favorite as It shows the human interaction
inside this space. It also conveys the simplicity of the shapes
and tones of the Norman Foster extension.
dsc 0711
a different angle showing the marriage of the old
and new structures
dsc 0741
I like this image again as it shows the interaction
of the visitors to this structure, it is also taking
at an unusual angle as I am looking down onto the
space.
dsc 0745
I visualized the final image when I was taking this
shot. It was amazing to see that the single women
leaning against the staircase was in neutral clothing
so blended so well with the structure. I hoped that
I could edit this image in photo shop as I have
seen this in my head.
GROUP AND REVIEW
I revisited my final selection and felt that I was missing some
elements from my initial brief. I wanted to have some more
choice of human interaction in this space. I therefore added
in two additional images. Both picked out single groups of
people sitting and pondering the space. I felt it was better
to have more choice in this area as all images I selected
needed to be cropped or edited to balance the final image.
FINAL EDITED SELECTION
I edited and reprocessed the final selection in photoshop
The final published images
old and new combined
the above images was taken late afternoon so the light
was limited. I have chosen this image as I think it shows the
marriage of the old artifacts of the museum and the new
modern extension. I also like that this image has a compositonal
link of shape and form. The repetitive shapes in the roof
are also balanced by the triangle in the top of the roman
plinth and the triangle handrail on the stairs. Leaving the figure
in this shot gives it a sense of scale. My ideal would be to add
a bit more light to the foreground of the image.

This is my favorite image from the sequence of shots as to me it
shows the interaction of the visitors in this amazingly designed
location. This very simple composition shows the muted colour
tones of the marble stairs and also the acute shapes of the twisted
staircase. I would like to have improved the capture of the image
as there is engraved descriptions on the wall behind the people
and I would have liked to capture more detail.

LESSONS LEARNT
Using an editing suit to go through your images pre reprocessing
can be a great tool to indicate those images that are right or
technically correct to be processed in photoshop. Marking or
coding each image can make it clear what type of image you
have captured, in my case I indicated images that needed to be
cropped or masked to aid composition. Re reviewing your edit
makes it easier to identify what is missing from your final cut and
you can re review your rejects and start the selection process again.
I did this and added in some additional images of people.
