CONCENTRATING THE LIGHT

Exercise

Set up a simple still life demonstrating the effects of
concentrated lighting techniques.

Using a simple tungsten lamp I experimented
with placing a still life within its light.

The light fell in such a way that there was a light
hot spot on the table. I used that light as
the concentrated area of light and the
main a focal point in the foreground

I also used this hot spot as a source of shadow
and then placed a 3 dimensional object to create
some depth in the image. I used a silver
reflector to bounce back some light onto the
main subject in the foreground

Adding a dark backdrop focused the light
more and reduced the available light.

I prefer this image as it focuses the eye of the
contrast of the light and dark areas

all images f4.5 1/30 sec

The above image I used a torch to focus the light
just onto the face of this mask.
Expose was set at the lights area.

I also experimenting with painting in light
with the torch, which was effective

f4.5 2 sec

the above shows concentrated light to highlight
a single object. This lighting set up was
created by using a cover over the light
just producing enough light to focus
the light solely on the object. I took
several exposure settings to ensure that
I captured the detail of the object.

Comments
re look at the subject and experiment with some more
still life set ups. Use for ASSIGNMENT 5 to set up
some still life's narratives to support the main subject.
