COMMENTS
This trip allowed me to experiment with exposure and
different lighting conditions. I also used filters such
as polarizes and ND filters to improve colour saturation
and reduced the contrast between high and low light.
I also experimented with bracketing exposure levels
and took an image one stop over or one stop over
suggested exposure levels.
I often chose images that contained both areas of
light and dark to measure exposure levels to ensure
the highlights were not burn out and shadows did not
loose detail.
My biggest regret is not having a tripod with me
as I had very limited luggage allowance which
meant I had to leave the tripod as it was not
allowed in the cabin. I therefore had to change
the iso of the film speed to manage exposure
and ensure images were not blurred. I am
pleased with the images but could have
improved them by reducing the quality
of the final image.
I am really pleased with my images which
were taken in areas of light and dark
such as the Pantheon. I used the histogram
of the camera to measure the exposure levels
to ensure even if the image seemed on the
viewfinder too dark of light I had captured
some data which I could use in processing.
I was originally unhappy that I burnt out the
detail of the sky, but after looking at alot
of images on flickr it seems to be a common
problem.
I really like using shadows in composition
and the bright sun in Rome is a good source
of bright light which i could use to capture
both the main subject and its shadow,
It was important to move the camera
to the side of the light source to capture
the shadow detail.
I mostly pre set the white balance to the
current lighting conditions. On the cloudy
days I set the white balance to shade
and it gave the images a warmer tone.
This worked well to enhance the earthy
tones of the Roman buildings.
I think the area of improvement is
the photography of the night scenes
as some of the images the spot lights
are burnt out and I need to experiment
more with using strong light sources.
I am looking forward to my next trip
